PayPal admits US pressure over WikiLeaks account freeze

PayPal VP of platform Osama Bedier:

“State Dept told us these were illegal activities. It was straightforward.”

No specifics on which laws were breached was offered or, it appears, required— just the claim of ‘illegality’ in general.

Food for thought: If WikiLeaks’ recent publications were embarrassing someone other than the US, say China, Russia, Iran or North Korea, would the US be taking the same hard line? Or would they condemn any action by those countries against WikiLeaks as an act of oppression against democracy and a free press?
